“In Paradisum”

“In Paradisum by Charles Callahan (b. 1951) was written in 2010 for Flute and Organ and arranged for Trumpet and Organ for last year’s occasion of Remembrance at Saint Thomas on November 8, 2020.

Melancholic and contemplative by turns, Callahan weaves his beautiful melodic strands around the organ’s harmony, before quoting the Gregorian chant of the work’s title from the Catholic Mass for the Dead. In this excerpt, Charlie Johnson is on trumpet while Nicholas Haigh is on the organ.

Callahan is an American composer and organist who studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He is a prolific composer, and has served as music director at many churches, including that of the Church of the Epiphany in Washington DC, an illustrious Arts church in our nation’s capital where Jeremy Filsell, our Saint Thomas Director of Music, also served.”
